The Instrument Technician provides technical skills to ensure safety and protection to all patients requiring surgical intervention.

This position supports the Mission of the Hospital through the provision of distinctive and compassionate care to our patients. 


  • High School Graduate or GED preferred
  • Current CPR BLS for healthcare provider’s card upon hire
  • Central Service Certificate preferred.
  • Six months to one year experience as instrument technician in an acute care facility
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and technical skills to provide care for all surgical instrumentation trays and sterilization procedures within the department of Surgery.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age served on the unit. Possess knowledge of growth and development over the life span.
  • Must be able to speak, read and write English.


Prolonged extensive, walking/standing. Lifts, positions, push and/or transfers patients 50-70 lbs. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling.


Frequent exposure to noise, cold and heat. Occasional exposure to bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, general cleaning chemicals.

  • Functions with an awareness of patient safety issues and applies basic principles of safety as identified within the facility.
  • Follows the occurrence reporting policy and procedure in reporting any potential safety issues.

* Job Specific Accountabilities

Demonstrates knowledge of surgical equipment and instrumentation

  • Decontaminates instruments using appropriate techniques.
  • Examines instruments for damage and sends for repair as needed.
  • Lubricates instruments as needed.
  • Prepares instrument trays using appropriate list.

Assures sterility of supplies and equipment.

  • Checks all packages for integrity.
  • Checks all appropriate packages for sterility dates.

· Removes all outdated packages or damaged packages for reprocessing.

  • Packages all supplies and equipment for sterilization sign prescribed procedure.
  • Maintains sterilization logs per policy

Has knowledge of sterilizers and sterilization process.

  • Maintains sterilization logs per policy
  • Performs appropriate biological monitoring per policy.

· Initials corrective action as needed.

  • Tracks sterilized items.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Demonstrates age appropriate care for integration across the life span.

  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to unique needs of varying age groups with who she/he has contact.
  • Recognizes and responds to safety factors for age level involved.
