STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
This position supports the Mission of the Hospital through the provision of distinctive and compassionate care to our patients. To provide safe and therapeutic management of patient care to adult and elderly behavioral health patients through utilization of the Nursing process, in adherence to the Standards of Practice and policies and procedures, and in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team.
QUALIFICATIONS
● Current CA RN license,
● Current BLS for healthcare provider card,
● Current CPI certificate or within 30 days.
● LPS Designation within LA county (or within 90 days) whereby certifying RN to assess for and write 5150’s within CMC during scheduled shift (For FT RNs with 3 yrs. inpatient psych nursing experience).
● Minimum 1-year experience in acute human services area. Inpatient psychiatric experience preferred.
● Knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the ability to assess and interpret data, determine patient care requirements and deliver care relative to the patients’ age specific needs. Knowledge of the principles and practices of psychiatric nursing.
● Experience as a charge nurse, relief charge nurse, or team leader
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is of medium demand, walking and standing most of the time on duty. Occasional lifting of patients with assistance. Occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching. Hand manipulation, both fine and gross dexterity is required to writing and technical skills. Hazards include potential exposure to verbal/physical hostility, exposure to body fluids and blood, sharp objects and instruments, and assorted chemicals as listed in the MSDS manual.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working in an acute behavioral care environment with frequent patient and staff contact.
MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

*Job Specific Accountabilities
● Coordinates staff and patient activities during a specified shift
● Collaborates with Administrator to ensure appropriate skill mix is on duty for the oncoming shift.
● assigns licensed and non –licensed staff to care for patients according to patient needs and skill level of available staff.
● Monitors effectiveness of orientation process with new hires.
● Monitors timecards/sheets to verify staff are following the time keeping policy and procedure. Follows up with staff when non-compliant. Monitors and trends absenteeism and reports excesses to Administrator.
● Initiates and/or participates in coaching/counseling staff through the disciplinary process.
● Identifies staff development needs. Initiates and/or participates in biweekly charge nurse meetings.
● Coaches staff to develop and demonstrate appropriate problem solving behaviors and teaches methods to improve decision – making skills.
● Identifies opportunities to improve performance and leads and/or participates in specifically assigned performance improvement monitoring.
● Communicates to staff pertinent information through daily shift reports to ensure quality patient care.
● Prioritizes needs of the unit and communicates to staff on duty necessary information and responsibilities.
● Communicates effectively with all nursing staff
● Keep staff on the shift alert to roles in disaster and fire plans.
● Performs rounds at beginning of each shift to assess patient status and reports necessary findings to staff on duty.
● Maintains orderly, safe, clean conditions on unit.
● Makes rounds on unit each shift to inspect environmental and potential hazards.
● Inspects crash cart to ensure safety seal has not been broken or tampered with and documents findings. Responds proactively to patient satisfaction concerns.
● Supervises unit environment to ensure safety
● Oversees medication nurse and alerts MD if untoward side effects are evident in patients.
● Ensures that all rounds are completed throughout assigned shift and precautions are followed for high-risk patients.
● Ensures that assigned documentation is completed in full by end of shift.
● Supervises all staff and ensures that staff complete their assigned duties each shift
● Assess activity of patients’ behaviors/symptoms to validate criterion for input, hospitalization, and reports any findings to Utilization Review, which do not support hospitalization
● Documents unusual patient occurrences and follows policies/procedures as well as proper notifications, when pertinent.
● Assesses medical conditions in patients requiring additional nursing care, and accurately documents observations and findings.
● Assesses voluntary patient’s behavior per LPS guidelines when requested by attending psychiatrist

● Documents evaluation results in patient chart and completes 5150 certification accurately

Compensation Rate: $41.43 – $51.79/Hour
